What is dog agility?

  • Agility is a shared activity which you can enjoy with your dog.  A "handler" guides their dog around an "obstacle course" consisting of jumps, tunnels and other equipment in a race for both time and accuracy.

  • Agility training can help your dog develop focus, responsiveness, self control and confidence.

  • Agility can be enjoyed at many different levels from a fun-filled hobby right through to competition level.

  • At Oxford Agility we only use POSITIVE, REWARD BASED training based on games that you and your dog can play together.  We offer classes for all levels according to your dog's skill level, from complete beginner onwards

Dog agility training in Oxford

  • Agility training is about learning certain "handling skills and techniques" which will develop your canine-human partnership to the point where you will be able to direct your dog to confidently and safely around, through and over a set of obstacles.

  • Unless you have prior experience* you will start your agility journey at with....

  • PRE- AGILITY” training.  This short course will give you and your dog the basic skills needed to undertake more advanced training.  It is a pre-requisite for more advanced agility training but can also be enjoyed as a "stand alone" course.

  • WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?  You (the handler) will learn the basic skills to develop your dog's focus and confidence and turn them into an "agility addict".

  • You will be able to use these skills on some basic equipment.

  • You will learn how to use treats, toys and praise as rewards to to reinforce your dog's learning.

  • After completing this level you and your dog will be ready to move onto more advanced training ....

  • No expectation is made that you will move onto competition but we train correct handling methods so that you will be able to do this should you choose.

  • More importantly, we place the greatest emphasis on training safely to avoid injury to both dog and handler.

  • Your dog needs to be over 6 months of age, healthy and in good physical condition (if your dog needs to lose weight, it is better to address this before starting agility training).
  • The handler’s level of physical fitness is not as crucial but the less physically able you are the more skilled your dog will need to be – and that is down to your training routine!
  • If your dog is between 6 and 15 months, we limit jumping to poles on the ground and avoid anything too "twisty".  This is to protect their developing joints, bones and muscles.

* If you have prior experience of agility training, please let us know what level you are working at and we will invite you to an individual session to find the best level training for you to join.
